The guitar is one of the most popular instruments that people learn to play. It is versatile and used in almost all songs that are composed today. Additionally, it is a staple in any type of band or musical group. Before you can set out on a stage or entertain your friends with your musical talent you will need to learn how to read guitar sheet music. Once you learn the basics of how to do so and how to play the guitar, a little bit of practice is all that will stand between you and the entertainment you wish to deliver.

Guitar sheet music is written on a bass clef scale. This is indicated by a C symbol at the beginning of a piece of music. The bass clef scale is composed of lower octave notes to accompany the lower tuned instrument. When learning how to read guitar sheet music you will also need to identify which notes are what on the scale. You will see that a line of music is composed of five horizontal lines that go across each page. The vertical lines that are evenly spaced indicate the end of a measure. A measure is equivalent to four beats of music. Music is counted similar to seconds. Each note is approximately one second. This means that four quarter notes will equal one measure. When playing the guitar, there is a certain space on the strings that is held to help draw out the note for the associated time.

Starting from the bottom of the musical line, the notes that are placed on the line are E, G, B, D, F. An easy way to remember this is by using an acronym – “Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge”. Next, the spaces between the lines, from the bottom to the top, are labeled with the notes F, A, C, E. These are simple to remember as they spell out the word “FACE”. Through lessons or a guitar learning book you will learn to play each note using specific strings on the guitar. Understanding this and identifying the notes is the first step in learning how to read guitar sheet music.

For beginners who are just learning to read music you may want to write each note below the line of music. Each note also has a specific value. A note that is an egg-like O is called whole notes. A whole note is one that is held for the full four beats of a measure. Next, there is the half note. This looks similar to the whole note in that it is an egg-like O, but it has a tale on it that may go up or down depending on where the music falls on the scale. The direction of the tale is irrelevant. A half note is held for two beats; two half notes equal a full measure. There are the most common notes found when learning how to read guitar sheet music. After mastering what notes to play and how to understand the music, you will be able to perform many pieces with ease.
